PLACEMENT POLICY
Students who register for a 100-level German course are placed according to the number of years of previous study.
As a general rule:
100-level German courses cannot be taken on a pass/fail basis if the courses are being used to satisfy a requirement or as prerequisites of a course used to satisfy a requirement.
All 100-level German courses use the course management system SAKAI.
In 100-level German courses, students actively participate in each class, using German to complete a variety of meaningful and authentic tasks. These tasks require students to interact creatively with a partner or within small groups. Much of the class is conducted in German.

- Students with no knowledge of German at all, or with fewer than two years of high school German or the equivalent are placed in 105.
- Students with two or three years are placed in 106.
- Students with more than three years are placed in 107.

GERMAN 105
In this course, students will learn to provide basic information about themselves, their families, interests, likes and dislikes, as well as some daily activities in German; understand and participate in a simple conversation on a variety of everyday topics (e.g. weather, meeting new people, shopping for food);and read and understand authentic texts on above topics.

The objectives for German 106 are to increase expression (speaking and writing) and comprehension (listening and reading) skills in German by communicative interaction; learn intermediate grammar topics such as: present perfect tense, 2-way prepositions, adjective endings and comparisons, reflexive verbs, genitive case; expand vocabulary; increase awareness of and appreciation for Germany and Switzerland.

The objectives for German 107 are to increase expression (speaking and writing) and comprehension (listening and reading) skills in German by communicative interaction; learn intermediate grammar topics such as: simple past tense, subjunctive mood, relative clauses and passive voice; expand vocabulary; increase awareness of and appreciation for European (German, Austrian, Swiss) culture; increase awareness of and appreciation for certain germanophone cities, authors and films.
